What is Permanent Account Number(PAN)?


Pan stands for Permanent Account Number and is a unique identification number issued by the income tax department of India to identify every taxpayer in the country. Permanent Account Number or PAN Card is a nationalized identity card and has lifetime validity.  Without a PAN, you will not be able to carry out most of financial transaction. What is Tax Deduction Account Number(TAN)?


 

Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is known as TAN, it is a 10-digit alphanumeric number. The number is required to be obtained by all persons (Such as Individuals, Firms, LLPs, & Companies etc.) who are responsible for deducting or collecting the tax at source. This alphanumeric number is allotted by the Income Tax (IT) Department under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. It is required to be mandatorily quoted on all TDS related filings.

Why is TAN required?


TAN is required by all kind of assesses because without it Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) or Tax Collected at Source (TCS) returns are not accepted by TIN facilitation centres. Banks do not accept the challans for TDS/TCS payments if TAN is not quoted.

It needs to be mentioned that failing to apply for TAN in specified documents like TDS/TCS returns, e-TDS/e-TCS returns, TDS/TCS certificates, and TDS/TCS, payment challans can attract a penalty of upto Rs.10,000.
